In response to the prevailing violence and unrest surrounding the Panchayat elections in West Bengal, the deployment of central forces personnel has been intensified. On Thursday, 20 additional companies of central forces arrived in the Birbhum district of the state, bringing the total number of deployed companies to 465. This accounts for approximately 40,000 central forces personnel present in West Bengal.
The Calcutta High Court had previously ordered the deployment of 82,000 central forces personnel in West Bengal to ensure the smooth conduct of the elections. However, concerns have been raised regarding the State Election Commission's alleged delay in finalizing the specifics of their appointment despite the arrival of paramilitary personnel.
Sources have indicated that the newly arrived 20 companies of central forces will be deployed today itself in coordination with the Birbhum district administration. This step aims to address the escalating violence and provide a secure environment for the ongoing electoral process.
The situation in West Bengal remains tense as the state grapples with the challenges of conducting peaceful elections amidst widespread disturbances. The deployment of additional central forces is expected to bolster security measures and maintain law and order during the electoral proceedings.
